Kike Santander Biography

Kike Santander is rated today as a Hit Maker and a hitmaker. His career is demonstrated by reviewing the Latin music charts of Billboard magazine, in which in the last 5 years, more than 25 of his songs have reached the coveted “Top Ten”. In the same way, more than 15 of his songs have appeared in the list of the 100 most played songs by the association of authors and composers BMI.

Born in Cali, Colombia in 1960, Kike Santander began his musical studies at an early age, playing the accordion and experimenting with instruments such as the guitar, the piano and later devoted himself fully to the interpretation of the electric bass. His early musical influences came from a wide mix of genres spanning those indigenous to his native country, bolero, rock, Anglo-American pop, classical music, and jazz.

In 1978, when he was 18 years old, he began his medical studies at the Universidad del Valle del Cauca; institution in which he obtained the professional degree in Medicine and Surgery, a career that, fortunately for Latin music, he never practiced. Simultaneously, he continued to advance in his musical studies, perfecting his piano performance and studying musical synthesis, arrangements and harmony. He devoted his time and effort to composing and producing “Commercial Jingles.” This work earned him the credibility not only of his colleagues, but also of the advertising agencies for which he became the most prominent figure in this genre; Kike wrote and produced over 1,500 “jingles.”

In 1993, Kike began his career as a songwriter and producer; working for several Colombian artists such as Marcelo Cezán, for whom he wrote and produced the hits ¨Una en un million¨ and ¨Hierba Mojada¨. It was precisely in that year that Kike began the long list of awards to which he has been awarded, by receiving the BMI award for ¨ Boca Dulce Boca¨, a song he composed together with Estefano and performed by José Luis Rodríguez ¨ El Puma ¨. It was then, and as a result of his already recognized talent, that Kike Santander joined forces with Emilio Estefan Jr. He wrote and co-produced all the songs on Gloria Estefan’s ¨ Abriendo Puertas ¨ album, winner of the “Grammy” award. He participated as a composer on the album ¨ Amor ¨ by Jon Secada This was also awarded a “Grammy.”

In 1995, shortly after establishing his residency in Miami, Kike wrote and produced the hits ¨Piel Morena¨ and ¨Me Faltas Tú¨ from the album ¨Extasis¨ by the Mexican Talía. Later he wrote and produced for her four songs for her multi-platinum album ¨Amor a la Mejicana¨, among them ¨Mujer Latina¨ and ¨Por Amor¨.

In 1997 he composed and produced six songs for Alejandro Fernández’s album ¨ I am Enamorando ¨, which was nominated for a “Grammy” award and sold more than three million copies around the world, achieving for Alejandro Fernández the transition from the ranch market to the Pop music market. During these years, Kike positioned himself as one of the most important figures in the Latin music market through his compositions and productions for figures of the stature of Carlos Santana Luis Miguel Marc Anthony Jennifer López, Gloria Estefan Chayanne , Thalía, Ana Gabriel David Bisbal Alejandro Fernández, Christian Castro Rocío Durcal, Gilberto Santa Rosa Bacilos, Olga Tañón Myriam Hernández Albita Rodríguez, Giselle and Los Tri-o, among others.

Kike has repeatedly been the recipient of virtually every award and accolade given out in the music industry: Billboard, Premios lo Nuestro, TV y Novelas,, El Heraldo, BMI and many more.

But it was precisely in 1999 when Kike joined the select group of the most prestigious award in music: The Grammy Award, for his song ¨Mi Verdad¨, performed by Alejandro Fernández, winner in the category “Best Regional Song”.
In 1999 he also won for the second consecutive year the BMI award for “Composer of the Year” for “Best Latin Song” for ¨ Si Tú Supieras ¨. The following year (2000) with the “Composer of the Year” award and four honorable mentions .

And in 2001, he was recognized with another “Latin Grammy”; this time in the category “Best Tropical Song”, for “Júrame”, performed by Giselle.

In 2001, Kike produced for artists such as Diego Torres , Amaury Gutiérrez, Ilegales, Jaime Camil and Cristian Castro, whose single “Azul” reached the first places in the USA and Latin America. It remained at # 1 on Billboard Magazine’s “Hot Latin Tracks” chart for 10 consecutive weeks.

In 2002, Kike continued his rising career by producing and composing hit after hit. To list them: The production “Corazón Latino”, the first album by Spanish artist David Bisbal, who began his career at a dizzying pace and entered the world of entertainment through the front door. This is considered one of the most successful careers achieved in a short time in Latin America. He composed the hit song “Por mas que Intent” performed by Gilberto Santa Rosa, a song nominated for the Latin Grammy Awards as “Best Tropical Song.” The song “No Podrás” for Olga Tañon, hit in Billboard Magazine. The song “Between delirium and madness” for singer Jennifer Peña produced the song “Adouma” that opens the album ofCarlos Santana “Shaman”; not to mention songs produced for Carolina Lao, Natalia Oreiro, among others.

In 2003, Kike did not slow down: he produced Ricardo Montaner’s new album “Prohibido Olvidar”, by Noelia “Natural”, by Spanish Raúl “As de Corazones”; Rocío Durcal “Caramelilto”. For the production of Luis Miguel # 33 he composed the songs “Devuélveme el amor” and “Y sigo”. He worked for Luis Fonsi on his new album “Abrazar la vida” writing with his brother Gustavo the song “Yo te Propongo” and as if that were not enough, he closed this year with a flourish producing the second album of the now famous Spanish singer David Bisbal album that promises to be another bombshell! Its worldwide launch is expected in February 2004.
